Political Idolatry

Main Idea

Living in Babylon means living in an age of political idolatry. We must be careful not to place our politics above God, as it can become a form of worship and an idol in our lives.

Scripture References

Daniel 3:1-7, Daniel 3:13-15, Daniel 3:24-26, John 18:36, Philippians 2:5-9, Ephesians 2:19, Ephesians 4:11-13, Romans 12:1-2

Can you think of any idols in your life? How can you let go of them and put God first?

Idolatry is when we put something or someone above God in our lives. It can be anything from sex and money to politics and sports.

Why do you think people get so fired up about their idols, even to the point of hostility and violence?

Discussion Questions:

What are some good things that can become idols in our lives if we're not careful?

How can we avoid bowing down to political idolatry in our current society?

In what ways can we focus more on following and identifying with Jesus instead of political ideologies and parties?

When God's people make a big deal about politics, the world sees that as more important than God. But when we make much of God, the world will see politics differently.

Summary

Today, Pastor Paul Feuerstein from Helena First continued the series Living in Babylon. He talked about political idolatry and how it affects us in a post-Christian, secular society. Babylon has always represented a Godless culture, and today we will focus on how we can avoid falling into the trap of political idolatry.

Call to Action

Some next steps to take this week:

Let us focus more on following Jesus than following politics. While political issues do matter, Jesus should always matter more in our lives.

Remember that the church exists to equip, mature, and bring unity among believers. Let us be disciples in community, following the example of Jesus.
